Many thanks to Martina from the Irish Heart Foundation who came to collect €150.00 which we had collected earlier in the year for Happy Heart Day. Here she is pictured with the Active School Committee. Huge thanks also to everyone who donated to such a worthy cause.
Over the past few weeks we have been working on the topic of Rain forests. A rain forest can be defined as a forest that experiences high rainfall. They are located north and south of the equator in the tropic of cancer and Capricorn. We looked at a number of things under the heading of Rainforests. We looked at Rainforests of the World, Layers of the rainforests, animals of the rainforests, people of the rainforests and finally why they are in danger. When we had covered each section we compiled a booklet. We also linked our rainforest work with Art. For further information check out http://www.srl.caltech.edu/personnel/krubal/rainforest/Edit560s6/www/what.html. As the weather is so nice we decided to take our history lesson outside today. We became familiar with some games and pastimes enjoyed by our grandparents long ago. One which was quite common was skipping. We used a traditional rhyme Teddy Bear Teddy Bear to say as we skipped. Skipping rhymes were common long ago. We also noted the games that may change and the ones that will not e.g. gaelic, hurling, yo-yo etc.
This week we took part in active stations at lunch, organised and ran by the senior class. There were 6 stations. After 3 minutes at a station we changed. We took part in dance, races, athletics, hula hooping, parachute games to name but a few. Many thanks to the children from 4th - 6th class for working very hard and bringing a great deal of fun and enthusiasm to each and every station. Well done!
Our SPHE Stay Safe Lessons have begun and this week we discussed friendship. We ended our lesson with a fun song with a very important message. We were sad to say our goodbyes today to our hurling coach Benny. Benny has been part of the school coaching staff for the past 6 years and has brought a great deal of expertise of hurling to our school. Thank you Benny for all your hard work and dedication. We will miss the fun and laughter each Friday you brought to our school. Every good wish to you in your new job in Co Carlow.
Today we had a lovely surprise when Garda Lavin visited us in class. He showed us his asp, handcuffs etc . What a special treat we got when he brought us for a small spin in his Garda van....Thank you Garda Lavin.
