Today we went back in time to the Stone Age and pretended we were living in Ireland during the Stone Age period. A chief of a tribe had died and a great tomb had to be built. We decided to build a passage tomb and take our inspiration from one of Ireland's most impressive passage tombs - Newgrange. Newgrange is a Stone Age (Neolithic) monument in the Boyne Valley, County Meath, it is the jewel in the crown of Ireland's Ancient East. Some of the stones in Passage tombs were decorated with spirals, curved and linear zig zag lines etc. We added this art work using chalk pastels. To begin engineering week we watched a movie called "Dream Big - Engineering our world". We saw structures from all over the world designed by engineers. Here is a brief clip of the movie Following the movie we got into groups and were given an engineering challenge entitled "The Slender Tower Challenge". Each group had to build the tallest tower with the smallest footprint. They were given 1 x scissors, 10 x sheets of paper, and a roll of sellotape. Here we are at work and some of our results. Definitely some budding engineers in our class

Today we used this wonderful website for money/use of coins/working out change etc. Here is the link to play - http://www.teachingmoney.co.uk/eurosite/euroindex.html.
This week in Art we studied the artist Wassily Kandinsky. He was born in Moscow, Russia. He enjoyed music and learned to play the piano and the cello. The colors of nature dazzled him. Both music and colors would had a huge impact on his art. Kandinsky was one of the founding fathers of Abstract Art. Kandinsky felt that he could express feelings and music through colors and shapes in his paintings. For example, he thought that yellow had the crisp sound of a brass trumpet and that certain colors placed together could harmonize like chords on a piano. The shapes he was most interested in were the circle, triangle, and the square. He thought the triangle would cause aggressive feelings, the square calm feelings, and the circle spiritual feelings.
Inspired by his painting "Squares with Concentric Circles" we painted some Kandinsky hearts keeping with the theme of Valentines. What a lovely day we had today for Happy Heart Day! From balloon races to circuits we enjoyed every minute. It was fantastic to be out and about in the fresh air and feeling the benefits of all our exercise. Well done to our Active Heart Art winners also and to all who took part. Many thanks to all who donated so generously to both charities. |
